Coaching Staff

Maya EtienneMaya Etienne '22 is a volunteer assistant coach for USI Women's Soccer, working primarily with the goalkeepers. Etienne played for the USI Women's Soccer program from 2019-22 under Head Coach Eric Schoenstein, finishing her playing career at the top of USI record books.

While in a USI uniform, Etienne was a three-time Academic All-GLVC, two-time CSC Academic All-District, and OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree. On the field, Etienne was an All-GLVC Third Team and All-OVC Second Team selection.

Between the posts, Etienne played in 71 matches, tallying over 6,300 minutes, and posted a 0.76 goals against average. The former USI netminder made 308 saves toward a 0.849 save percentage. Etienne won 39 games with 36 shutouts.

In the USI records books, Etienne is first in career shutouts, second in goals against average, and third in career saves. In 2019, she set a single-season record with 11 clean sheets, helping lead USI to an NCAA II Tournament appearance.

Etienne is a Midland, Michigan native, where she lettered at Midland High School. At Midland, she was a first-team All-District, All-Region, All-State, and State Dream Team (Top 11) selection as a junior and senior. Etienne helped lead MHS to two district championships was selected as League MVP and United Soccer Coaches High School All-America Team as a senior. Etienne recorded 58 shutouts over her high school career.

Etienne was a computer information systems major at USI.


Alliyah VargaAlliyah Varga joined the USI Women's Soccer staff in July of 2024 as women's soccer assistant coach. Varga is involved in all aspects of the program.

In Varga's first season as assistant coach in 2024, Varga helped coach the Screaming Eagles to a fourth-place finish in the Ohio Valley Conference and a quarterfinal berth in the OVC Championship Tournament. Plus, Southern Indiana set new D-I marks for the program with four OVC wins, 15 points in conference play, and 20 goals scored during the 2024 campaign.

Before arriving at USI, Varga was an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin in 2023 while working on her master’s degree. Varga assisted the Skyhawks with training sessions, match day setup and preparation, team social media, and other duties.

Varga was also an assistant coach with the Olympic Development Program in 2023-24. Varga was a Tennessee ODP Age Group Assistant for the 2010 and 2011 Girls' state teams, helping run training sessions and coaching during matches.

Previously, Varga was a U-9 assistant from 2020-22 and was a course instructor for National Soccer Coaches Association of America providing coaching education. Varga is also a United States Soccer Association member.

Varga’s playing career includes professional experience in Kotka, Finland with KTP (Kotkan Tyovaen Palloilijat) in 2023, competing in the Ykkösliiga.

Prior to playing professionally for KTP, Varga spent her collegiate career at Gardner-Webb University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Sports Education. At the D-I level with Gardner-Webb, Varga was a Big South Conference All-Tournament and All-Conference Team honorable mention selection in 2022. In four seasons, Varga made 40 starts in 64 games played, racking up over 3,800 minutes on the field and collecting six assists.
